If you haven’t noticed from the features in this issue of Sendai Motions Gazette though I highly doubt it—yes, cherry blossom season is here! There’s nothing like sitting under fully bloomed sakura trees with friends, sharing delicious treats. When it comes to classic hanami (cherry blossom viewing) foods, rice balls, dango, and karaage fried chicken often come to mind. But for me, the ultimate hanami food is yakitori.

As a longtime yakitori lover, visiting different spots has become one of my favorite hobbies. After years of exploring Sendai’s yakitori scene, the place that left the strongest impression on me is Yoshito & Tsukasa.

Located in Aramachi, just a 15-minute walk south of Sendai Station, Yoshito & Tsukasa is a hidden gem. At first glance, you might not even realize it’s a restaurant it remains closed on weekdays, opening only on Saturdays and select holidays. The small, unassuming space seats around ten people, but the yakitori here is among the best in Sendai—guaranteed.

What makes it special? Junwakei chicken, a rare and premium variety known for its exceptional tenderness. Every skewer is incredibly juicy, enhanced by the owner’s expert grilling technique. Even those
who usually avoid organ meats will be surprised at how delicious they are here. The chicken hearts are tender, never tough, and the liver—free of bitterness—has a smooth, creamy texture reminiscent of cream cheese or foie gras.

Beyond the food, the restaurant’s atmosphere is something to appreciate. With no excessive decorations, it exudes the charm of a hidden, authentic izakaya. Sitting at the counter, watching the owner skillfully grill each skewer, and—if you speak Japanese—chatting with him makes for a truly enjoyable experience.
The sound of sizzling charcoal, paired with an ice-cold beer or sake, is the ultimate way to unwind.

If you’re planning to see the cherry blossoms in Sendai this spring, add this Saturday-only yakitori spot to your itinerary. Enjoy the sakura by day, then end it with the irresistible aroma and flavors of perfectly grilled yakitori at Yoshito & Tsukasa.

So, here’s to Yoshito & Tsukasa’s
yakitori—kanpai!
