Explore Miyagi Prefecture's Northern Coast Through Wine!

Eleven and a half years have passed since the Great East Japan Earthquake, which particularly devastated the Sanriku coastal area. Although the area has made incredible progress in terms of infrastructure development, such as roads and housing, the major challenge the local community faces today is restoring and sustaining the liveliness of the region. In order to tackle this issue, the idea for Wine Tourism Sanriku 2022 was born. With the goal of encouraging people to continue visiting the area and discover the wonders of Sanriku, the Wine Tourism Sanriku Executive Committee has launched the Wine Tourism Sanriku project.

From fresh fish caught in high-quality fishing grounds and delicious wine from extensive vinyards, Sanriku is home to a wide variety of rich food and drink just waiting to be discovered. This exclusive Tohoku wine event will be held for the first time ever this year on October 22 and 23, providing visitors with the opportunity to experience the region's unique nature, climate, and foods first hand, as well as meet the inspiring people of Sanriku. The event will tour 4 wine producing coastal cities in Japan's north-eastern region. The main event spans across two prefectures where guests will be able to explore Ofunato and Rikuzentakata in Iwate Prefecture as well as Kesennuma and Minamisanriku in Miyagi Prefecture. Discoverable by shuttle bus, a total of 9 wineries will be participating in the event: 6 wineries in the 4 coastal cities previously mentioned, accompanied by 3 guest wineries from the most northern part of the Sanriku region; the village of Noda in Iwate Prefecture and Hachinohe in Aomori Prefecture. Alongside the wine produced in the Sanriku coastal area, culinary menus featuring local ingredients, as well as a wide variety of other events and optional tours will also be held simultaneously in each area with local businesses!
