Yamagata's Biennial Exhibition Pursuing Deeper Human Connections

Two years ago, the Yamagata Biennale was held online due to covid. This year, it will make a comeback in various facilities in downtown Yamagata through seven projects under the theme of "Overcoming the Chaos of Life and Connecting the Living."
Note: Some online programs and mixed media programs will also available during the exhibition.

In our contemporary societies where individuals are becoming evermore divided, separated, and isolated, we are entering an era of new connections. While the natural and human worlds continue to collide violently as they search for harmony and balance, humans seek out places where they can escape, revitalize, and reconnect in order to not lose sight of the light that guides their will to live.

In the preambule of the "Fundamental Laws on Culture and the Arts" (Bunka Geijutsu Kihonhou 文化芸術基本法) reads the following (loosely translated):

Culture and the arts provide the soil for people to sow the seeds that connect their hearts to one another, to understand and respect one another, to form a society accepting of diversity, and to contribute to world peace.

Inspired by these words, this years edition of the Yamagata Biennale tackles the challenge of creating a place in the heart of Yamagata where we can connect deeply with one another through art and design.

Don't miss out on this unique and inspiring event, as the next one won't be back until 2024!

What is a Biennale?

Biennale is an italian word signifying "every other year" or "biennial" in English. The term was popularized by the Venice Biennale international cultural exhibition, and is widely used in the art world for large-scale international contemporary art exhibitions held every two years!
