19 – 20 July 2022・Location: Downtown Sendai...

Enjoy Japanese Summer Matsuri at the Yanagimachi Shrine in Downtown Sendai!

Every year on the 19th and 20th of July, the street in front of Yanagimachi Dainichi Nyorai Shrine is turned into a pedestrian paradise with stands lining the streets, a stage for live music, and much more! This festival, is the Yanagimachi Summer Matsuri, also known as the Yanagimachi Dainichi Nyorai Festival. Normally the streets are packed with people enjoying the festivities, like in the video below, however due to COVID-19 concerns, the festival will be held on a smaller scale (this unfortunately means no stage, and fewer stands than usual).

However, you can still enjoy this matsuri festival full of various events, such as games, live performances, and fireworks displays, during your casual stroll through the town! The event will run from 11AM to 8PM, with 3 main attractions: the "gokitou" (prayer), the "Children's Mikoshi" (portable shrine carried by children), and fireworks. Elementary school aged children can also participate in the "Matsuri Paradise Game," so long as they have a ticket.

Since this year's festival falls on a week-day, be sure to come 'round during your lunch-break or after work/school with your colleagues and friends!
