Akiu Otaki Falls is a nationally designated place of scenic beauty and is said to be one of Japan’s three great waterfalls. In autumn, the surroundings are dyed in splendid reds and yellows, allowing you to enjoy the famous waterfall along with the autumn leaves. You can view the entire panorama of the great waterfall, which is 6 meters wide with a 55-meter drop, from the takimidai (waterfall viewing platform), but it’s also recommended to venture down to the basin to enjoy it up close. After a walk, take a break at the nearby Fudo Chaya teahouse with some handmade sweets. It’s a scenic spot selected as one of Japan’s Top 100 Waterfalls. There are plenty of tourist spots in the surrounding area.

A spectacular view unique to autumn, with fall colors surrounding a powerful waterfall
Homei Shijuhachi Falls is located on the border between Miyagi and Yamagata prefectures. It’s a famous waterfall known to connoisseurs, named because the beautiful sound of the water resembles the cry of the legendary phoenix. From the high ground at the end of the walking path, you can look down on the waterfall and enjoy the beautiful contrast between the vibrant autumn leaves and the white, foaming water. Take a good look at the spectacular scenery the rich nature has created. There is no lighting in the area, so it’s recommended to visit before sunset.
