Zen Dust

Zen as it is

September 19, 2017

Foreign residents of Japan are not only consumers of local culture. We contribute a lot. We write articles, take part in TV programs, work as interpreters during international events and we create art. And sometimes we even create traditional Japanese art.

It simply happened this way. A couple from Poland took tonsure and became Zen monks. They came to Japan. They settled down. And as a result - they have been living here, in Sendai, for more than 20 years, creating very Japanese and very much traditional Zenga art. Nyogen Nowak and Myoshin Hadydon are creating a beautiful and deep part of Sendai culture. And now - you have a chance to get to know it yourself.

Buddhas and Bodhisattvas, Zen teachers, koan scenes are depicted in a simple yet refined manner. The pictures they create are true Zen - they are impossible to describe. They leave you with a whole lot of thoughts and feelings, and at the same time, the best way to enjoy them is to stop thinking at all.

The exhibition opens at a temple named Kozenji - very small one, but with a long history. According to some sources, the main statue of Kozenji, Sentai (Sendai) Jizo-son, might have given Sendai its name. This is the rightest place for these pictures - sacred space for the sacred art. On 21st, 11:30 there is an opening ceremony that will be visited by Yamadera Risshakuji temple's abbot. If you want to meet the couple, you should definitely participate.

The exhibition is on from 21st September to 25th September everyday from 10:00 to 18:00 (until 15:00 on 25th) in the second floor of Kozenji. And it is absolutely for free.
